An Osteopathic consultation will begin with discussing your symptoms in detail, as well as taking a thorough medical history and questions relating to your lifestyle.
This allows the osteopath to make an accurate diagnosis. All information shared during your appointment is confidential and your patient records protected under GDPR.
As with any healthcare appointment, it may be necessary for me to ask you to remove some clothing during the examination. This is to investigate further the areas of discomfort. However, your comfort is the main concern, and If you feel uncomfortable undressing to your underwear, then it may be useful to wear close fitting garments such as gym wear, or shorts and t shirt. This will enable me to work more effectively.
After a thorough examination which involves gently palpating through the affected areas and asking you to perform certain movements, a diagnosis can be made. Treatment is based on the individual and as such is different for every patient. Techniques used can be varied from gentle stretches, articulations to indirect techniques. They all aim to restore good range of movement, diminish pain, and allow the body to return to optimum health.
Osteopaths may also give advice on exercises, diet, posture and changes to lifestyle. X-rays, scans or other tests may be required, and your osteopath may refer you to your GP for any additional investigations and treatment if necessary.
